Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government has welcomed today’s news from Irish Water that planning approval has been secured to progress work on the new wastewater treatment network on the north side of Cork Lower Harbour.
The Minister acknowledged the significant progress that has been made to date on the Cork Lower Harbour Drainage Project, including the delivery of a new wastewater treatment plant at Shanbally, which commenced operations last December and is now treating waste from Carrigaline, Crosshaven and Shanbally.
He also noted that work has recently started on the repair and upgrade of the sewerage network on the south side of Cork Lower Harbour including Carrigaline, Monkstown, Passage West and Ringaskiddy. All wastewater from these areas is scheduled to be diverted to the new wastewater treatment plant by early 2019 ensuring full treatment before its discharge to the sea.
“Today’s announcement paves the way for work to begin in Cobh on this element of the drainage project next year and will result in major improvements to water quality in Cork Lower Harbour” said the Minister.
